Copying between Catalogs in AutoCAD Plant 3D

Today we will take a quick look at how to copy items between catalogs.  One of my main recommendations when getting started with Plant3D is to maintain your own company catalogs and specs separate from the default installed catalogs and specs.  Sometimes though, you want to start with a part that exists in the installation catalog and modify it to meet your standards. In those cases, you will need to copy items from the installation catalogs to your own company catalog.

  • Open the source catalog in catalog editor.
  • Find your component to copy
  • Use the copy function (right-click > copy or Ctrl+C).
  • Switch to the destination catalog
  • Paste (right-click > Paste or Ctrl+V)

First open up the ASME Valves Catalog in the spec and catalog editor.  Make sure to switch to the Catalog Editor tab.

I used the short description and pressure class filters to display only 150 lb ball valves. Select the 1/2”-24” Flanged Long Pattern Ball valve.

Right click and select Copy.

Switch to the catalog you want to move the component to, right-click and select Paste.  I am going to use a PDO catalog that I’m building.

That’s all it takes to move a component to a new catalog!
