One of the nice features about AutoCAD Plant 3D is that you can easily create a custom support. While you can create a support on the fly using PLANTPIPESUPPORTADD, frequently you will need to create your own custom support in AutoCAD.
Here are the steps to creating your own custom support.
- Create your AutoCAD Solid.
- Set your UCS to World.
- Use PLANTPIPESUPPORTCONVERT
- Add your Isometric Symbol type or Key.
In this tutorial, I’ll use wear pad as an example.
Per the image below I’ve created a wear pad in my 3D model using standard AutoCAD commands.
I was unable to get the command to complete correctly, unless my UCS was set to World. Set the UCS, and turn on your mid osnap and nearest osnap before starting the PLANTPIPESUPPORTCONVERT command.
Start the PLANTPIPESUPPORTCONVERT command.
Select the wear pad.
The specify insertion point is the tricky part. I’m going to use the .XY point filter and the Mid between 2 points osnap to get a point in the middle of the support. I could draw a reference line to get the correct mid point, but the following procedure saves time and steps once you get used to it. Make sure your Mid osnap and Nearest osnaps are on.
Type in .XY at the command line, and then Shift-Right click and select Mid Between 2 Points. Below is a screenshot of my command line and right-click menu so you can see what I’m trying to describe.
Pick the top mid point on the pad.
Pick the far top mid point of the pad.
You will get prompted to pick a Z point. I use the nearest osnap in this scenario, and hover over the top line of the pipe. Most other picks don’t seem to process.
Sometimes the command will complete successfully, but the component still won’t work. Before proceeding, make sure you get grips when you select the converted support.
Finally, we have to indicate how the symbol should be drawn on the isometrics. Go to the support’s properties, and set the Content Iso Symbol definition to TYPE=SUPPORT.
Change your descriptions (short, long (Size), long (Family)) as needed.
Run an iso.
