Single Flange Insertion in AutoCAD Plant 3D

A common misconception about Part Insertion in Plant 3D is that flanges are always inserted with a mating flange.  This would mean  to insert one flange without its mating flange, we would need insert the flange and then end the command to delete the mating flange. While this isn’t difficult it does interrupt workflow.

Thankfully, this is only a misconception; it is very possible to insert one flange without its mate.

 

Once you begin inserting a flange read the command line:

     When using the Dynamic Tool Palette the command line should read:

EXECUTETOOL Specify insertion point or press Ctrl key to select next attachment port [Next]:

     When using the Route Pipe Tool from the Part Insertion panel the command line should read:

     When inserting from the Pipe Spec Viewer the command line should read:

Regardless of what method is being used to insert the flange, change the orientation or insertion point by inputting N into the command line [Enter].  Once the orientation or insertion point has been changed, Plant 3D should insert only one flange when inserted at the end of a pipe line.

 

Without changing the insertion point or orientation of the part, Plant 3D will try to insert the face of the flange opposite to the selected point as shown in the picture below.  Plant 3D knows that, for this part to connect to your pipe in the specified orientation, a mating flange will be needed, so it inserts a flange as needed.

Once the insertion point or orientation has been changed Plant 3D knows that the flange is to be inserted by the weld neck end of the flange, therefore Plant 3D does not see a need to insert a second flange.

Once the orientation or insertion point of the flange has been changed and the pipe’s end point has been selected, the results are evident; only one flange is inserted.
